Every year I see people participating in National Novel Writing Month, and every year I regard these people with wary admiration. They must be crazy, I think, to imagine they can crank out a full-length novel in a month. They must be well-disciplined, I also think. I wish I had that sort of determination.
A writing buddy asked me this year if I was planning on doing NaNoWriMo.
My knee-jerk reaction was hell no. I’ve been trying to write this novel for years; how could I possibly crank it out in a month? But if I think about it, one of the major things in my way has been the constant revision process. Because I submitted the novel chapter by chapter for critique by others, I was so focused on trying to make everything perfect it hindered my progress.
Maybe getting the first hideous draft out there in a month is the answer to getting it completed. I could go back and “perfect” everything for the eyes of others later.
So, I’m considering giving it a try. I signed up on the NaNoWriMo website (my name is Ceolsige there if you’d like to be friends!) and checked it out.
I don’t really understand the site very well. I get I am supposed to supply a word count each day, but other than that I’m clueless.
Have you ever done NaNoWriMo? Do you have any advice for a newbie? Do you plan to do it this year?
