Are You Doing NaNoWriMo?

Every year I see people participating in National Novel Writing Month, and every year I regard these people with wary admiration. They must be crazy, I think, to imagine they can crank out a full-length novel in a month. They must be well-disciplined, I also think. I wish I had that sort of determination.

A writing buddy asked me this year if I was planning on doing NaNoWriMo.

My knee-jerk reaction was hell no. I’ve been trying to write this novel for years; how could I possibly crank it out in a month? But if I think about it, one of the major things in my way has been the constant revision process. Because I submitted the novel chapter by chapter for critique by others, I was so focused on trying to make everything perfect it hindered my progress.

Maybe getting the first hideous draft out there in a month is the answer to getting it completed. I could go back and “perfect” everything for the eyes of others later.

So, I’m considering giving it a try. I signed up on the NaNoWriMo website (my name is Ceolsige there if you’d like to be friends!) and checked it out.

I don’t really understand the site very well. I get I am supposed to supply a word count each day, but other than that I’m clueless.

Have you ever done NaNoWriMo? Do you have any advice for a newbie? Do you plan to do it this year?

  1. Hi there!
I’m also a writer and can relate to some of your post messages, so I thought I’d say hello. As for NaNoWriMo, yes, I participated the last two years and successfully completed both. So my advice is to create an account (if you haven’t already) and read the forum/posts for newcomers. They’re full of advice, like figuring out if you’re a pantser or plotter (or mixed), and then offer suggestions on how to prepare for November.
I’m ‘mixed’, so I approached NaNoWriMo with a very rough outline that detailed a few highlights to hit at certain points. The rest was “hey, let’s see where this takes me,” type of approach (ie pantser).
Ok, so I’m not sure this helped but the forums definitely will. Good luck and let me know if you sign up (I’ll cheer you on).

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to give me some tips! Definitely helpful. I’ve always been a pantser, myself, but I think to prepare for how quickly it’ll need to be done, I’ll create a thorough outline to help.

      I’m planning to sign up!
